Signs and Display Stands: The Right Materials for Indoor and Outdoor Use

Published on 21 September 2026

Choosing the right substrate material for signs and display stands is a decisive factor in their lifespan, functionality, and visual impact. Graphic design and print files may be technically flawless—yet if the material doesn't match the environmental conditions, the final result will suffer. Temperature fluctuations, moisture, UV radiation, and mechanical stress present completely different requirements outdoors than installations inside offices, law firms, or retail stores.

Substrate Materials for Indoor Use

Indoors, weather influences such as rain or frost do not apply. Nevertheless, factors like fire safety ratings, weight, dimensional stability, and surface appearance remain critical.

  • Rigid PVC Foam Sheets (e.g., Forex): This material is characterized by its light weight, smooth white surface, and excellent price-performance ratio. Rigid foam sheets are available in thicknesses ranging from 1 mm to 19 mm. They can be easily cut to size, milled, and drilled. Many variants come with a DIN 4102 fire rating (B1 flame-retardant), making them the standard choice for trade shows and public spaces. They are unsuitable for permanent outdoor use, as direct sunlight and heat can cause them to warp.
  • Lightweight Foam and Honeycomb Cardboard Panels: For temporary ceiling hangers, point-of-sale promotional signs, or exhibition displays, extremely lightweight panels with a polyurethane foam core (e.g., Kapa) or solid paper honeycomb boards are ideal. The latter are made from FSC-certified paper or cardboard with recycled content and can be disposed of with paper waste after use. They provide impressive rigidity at minimal weight, though they are sensitive to moisture.
  • Acrylic Glass (Plexiglas): Acrylic glass is preferred for indoor directional and practice signs. It delivers a glass-like, high-gloss finish at half the weight and with significantly higher shatter resistance than conventional glass. Typically, graphics are printed reverse-mirrored onto the back of the sheet using direct UV printing and then backed with white vinyl or opaque white ink. This creates depth and protects the print against scratches on the front surface.

Durable Materials for Outdoor Use

Outdoors, substrates are directly exposed to UV radiation, rain, snow, temperature swings from minus 20 to plus 40 degrees Celsius, and wind loads.

  • Aluminum Composite Panels (Alu-Dibond): The industry standard for long-term outdoor signage. The material consists of a polyethylene core sandwiched between two aluminum outer layers approximately 0.2 to 0.3 mm thick. Common total thicknesses are 2, 3, or 4 mm. Alu-Dibond is extremely rigid, weather-resistant, and shows minimal thermal expansion. It will not warp even under intense sunlight, making it suitable for building facade signs, sports ground advertising, corporate directional signs, and construction site boards.
  • Corrugated Plastic Sheets (Fluted Polypropylene): These honeycomb or fluted plastic sheets are very lightweight, flexible, and moisture-resistant. They are primarily used for short- to medium-term applications such as election campaigns, real estate boards, or temporary site signs. Because of their ribbed texture, they are less suited for high-end permanent installations, but they excel in wind resistance and quick mounting using cable ties.
  • Toughened Safety Glass (ESG): For exclusive entrance areas, thermally tempered glass is often the choice. It is scratch-proof, resistant to chemicals, and does not age. Due to its heavy weight and the complex cutting required prior to the tempering process, ESG requires precise advance planning for drilled holes and wall standoffs.

Display Stands and Portable Systems

Alongside permanently installed signage, portable advertising displays play a pivotal role in corporate communications.

  • Pavement Signs (A-Boards / Sidewalk Signs): The classic snap-frame system made of anodized aluminum allows for quick poster changes. For outdoor use, models featuring spring bases or fillable water bases are necessary to withstand wind gusts. Protective covers made from UV-stabilized polycarbonate prevent the enclosed prints from fading.
  • Roll-up Displays: Indoors, roll-up banners are the standard for trade shows, seminars, and reception areas. Beyond the mechanical base, the print medium is essential to quality: a dimensionally stable blockout film (PET core) with a gray back should be selected. This prevents the edges from curling inward and ensures that backlighting will not shine through the graphic.
  • Freestanding Pylons and Totems: In outdoor spaces, securely anchored pylons guide visitors to entrances or parking areas. They typically consist of structurally calculated steel or aluminum sub-constructions clad with Dibond or acrylic on both sides, optionally enhanced by integrated LED illumination.

Printing Methods and Surface Protection

The durability of signs is closely linked to the printing method and surface protection:

  1. Direct UV Printing: UV-curing inks are applied directly to the substrate and instantly cured with UV-LED lamps. This method is cost-effective and provides high edge sharpness. For long-term outdoor applications, an additional UV protective clear coat is recommended.
  2. Vinyl Mounting with Protective Overlaminate: The graphic is initially printed onto a polymeric adhesive vinyl film, which is then covered with a UV- and scratch-resistant laminate (matte or gloss). Only then is the film applied bubble-free to the substrate board. For heavily exposed areas, specialized anti-graffiti laminates are available, allowing spray paint to be removed using solvents without damaging the print.

Project Planning Considerations

Before a sign goes to print, several parameters should be established: the exact installation site, expected service life, building fire safety requirements, typical viewing distance, and the mounting method (e.g., concealed mounting plates, stainless steel standoffs, or frame systems).
